Mental Health, SIM

After joining the NHS in 1981 as a student Registered Mental Nurse (RMN), she spent time in clinical practice as a staff nurse, ward sister and community psychiatric nurse. She is educated to masters’ level and has a first class honours degree in education. Following her clinical practice, Elaine worked for the Northern Centre for Mental Health, National Institute for Mental Health (NIMHe) and the Care Services Improvement Partnership (CSIP) and was responsible for workforce, leadership, education and training across the north east and Yorkshire and Humber before returning to the North East Strategic Heath Authority in 2008.

Thereafter Elaine was appointed as the Director of the North East Leadership Academy. Within this role she demonstrated an in-depth understanding of the leadership agenda and has a strong track record of working in partnership and delivering leadership initiatives that impact upon service developments. Elaine was appointed Managing Director of Health Education North East (HENE), the Local Education and Training Board for the north east in January 2013. Her experience in leadership translated into continuous development of the team to deliver excellence in outcomes, whilst her clinician practice and passion ensured that patient care was at the heart of HENE.

Following her retirement in March 2015 Elaine is now leading the AHSN NENC Mental Health Programme and some specific service transformation initiatives.
