The aim of the event is to bring together the regional Emergency Laparotomy Surgical, Anaesthetic and Audit leads, to finalise and discuss the NENC EmLap pathway to allow submission to all Trusts in the NENC region for approval.

The project aims to focus on the development of a regional laparotomy pathway for the NE and Cumbria with the aim of improving outcomes. This pathway will include evidence-based interventions similar to the ELpQuip study and aims to standardise care and improve outcomes in this important group of patients.

You can download the draft EmLap pathway which will be discussed at this meeting by clicking the button below.

If you are unable to make this event we would still like to get your feedback and you can do this by emailing [email protected] and we will ensure your comments are taken into consideration along with all those made on the day.  Please make sure any feedback is submitted by close of play on Monday 25th March 2019 for inclusion.

Emergency laparotomy is a major surgical procedure, with 9.5% of patients reported to die within 30 days of surgery in the latest NELA report. There have been year on year improvements in mortality and length of stay but we know that 27% of the most urgent cases did not get into theatre in the recommended timeframe and 76% of septic laparotomy patients did not receive antibiotics within the correct timescales.

There are still areas where practice could be significantly improved and this collaborative meeting will inform and develop our future work.
