NIHR Clinical Research Network North East and North Cumbria are pleased to confirm the 2020 annual network event will be “Mind the Gap, Tackling Research Inequality”.

The day aims to educate, inform and challenge us to think about how we support our local community and provide inclusive research opportunities.

“As a network, we understand the pivotal role research plays in better outcomes for patients and the public, and we are committed to equity of access to research across the region.” explains Professor Caroline Wroe, Clinical Director of NIHR CRN NENC.

With an evolving research delivery landscape, this day will highlight many of the upcoming changes we need to consider in delivering inclusive health and care research across the region. By addressing these issues and removing obstacles, we can gain a better understanding of where patients and the public are falling between the gaps, and focus our efforts on reducing research inequalities.

We welcome a number of interesting speakers including Professor David Croisdale-Appleby OBE and Stephen Kirkham. Professor Croisdale-Appleby is a former international advertising executive, committed public servant and philanthropist, with a wealth of experience in championing those more disadvantaged to gain better representation in health and social care. Stephen Kirkham is a Patient Representative , Support Group Coordinator and Trustee at Cardiomyopathy, who received a heart transplant and has experience of gaining access to research into heart disease. Both these, and the other speakers, bring a number of different perspectives and insights to the day.

Experts from North East Quality Observatory Service (NEQOS), local authorities and the national NIHR Business Intelligence team will show how we can unlock the power of data to inform where we should be focusing our research priorities and opportunities, in an event set to bring together the NHS, local authorities, third sector and academia for the first time in the region to address research inequality.
