The need to detect early signs of deterioration in patients with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 is a significant challenge in health and social care. COVID virtual ward models use pulse oximeters to safely monitor and support patients in their own home, providing an opportunity to detect a decline in the patient’s condition at an early stage.

Early detection has been linked with reduced mortality, hospital length of stay and the number of patients requiring intensive care. From the patient’s perspective, this can enable them to remain at home with the reassurance that they are being monitored and there are appropriate escalation plans are in place if their condition deteriorates.

The event was organised by the Managing Deterioration Patient Safety Network for North East North Cumbria, together with the region’s Respiratory Network.
